Easy Gifts of Love

by Andrea on January 14, 2011 · 0 comments

I am looking forward to the next Holiday-Valentine’s Day.  Could anything be nicer than to give and receive sentiments of Love or Friendship?

I love to make all kinds of small things, little love tokens.   I like simple & handmade things for this day because it really is “the thought that counts.”  Thoughts of love and affection are inspirational.   I decided on Bookmarks for all the readers, Journals for the writers, cards for loved ones & small gift boxes for family.  And since I have so little time-they must be easy.  Fortunately, Loose Ends has fabulous paper and so many trims to accommodate every taste.

First, the bookmarks; I wanted to make some for friends in the Book Club.  I used Italian Renaissance Handpainted Ribbon & backed it with ‘Dusty Mauve’ Papiers Wrinkle Ribbon and some antique style Valentine “Vintage Visions”.   Using a fancy edge scissor, I added some trim above and below the cupid picture.  This was so easy and really works for making multiples.  I made another one with Frosted  “Seafroth” Papier ribbon & backed it with the Dusty Mauve again. Using the same Italian Renaissance ribbon, I cut a stylized heart shape then layered a Handprints marbled ribbon with some pink in it. Finally I added  Lingerie ribbon & printed a Valentine saying.

Special friends get a card, using a Handmade Paper from the Island Fiber Group called ‘Tropical Straw’. It’s has an interesting flecked background & occasional pieces of colored straw.  I ripped an 8 ½ X 11 piece & printed “You Are Loved” in the bottom right hand corner so I could just fold the paper in 4ths.  I used “Strawberry Crinkle  Rose Petals’ in the small size to create a flower & added one of our paper buttons in the middle.

There were a series of the reduced size Vintage Valentines printed right next to each other, all in a row. So, I made a small accordion book with them on the back and Valentine sayings on each panel inside.

Here’s a combination card & gift. This is so easy because the envelope makes the presentation. Using a ‘Paper Pouch’ that is decorated with a pulp white heart on a paper circle, measure the size of the paper to fit easily into the envelope. On regular computer paper I printed a poem in the lower right.  Then I cut a large heart shape out of Parisian Apartment “Hold to Light” Paper, Rochelle – Red.

Using this same paper, I covered the end papers in a Paper Crinkle Journal & added just a little Valentine note on the last end paper.  Adding to an existing journal is such a simple way to make a gift personal for writers.  On the first page of a ‘Loose Thoughts’ journal, I embellished it with a Valentine picture & sentiment.

Finally for gift packaging, I removed the cane fiber pieces from the top of a Red Cricket Box and put a Vintage Vision Valentine in the window. To cover up the removal on the inside, I just traced the top heart shape on Parisian Apartment “Hold to Light” Paper, Rochelle – Red & glued it to the inside top.

Itook a small Ridge Pillow box, with a little gift inside, wrapped red Abaca ribbon around the box, cut out the center square of  Renaissance Handpainted Paper Ribbon ‘Heart Collage’  as a final embellishment.

All of these were quick and easy.  Kids can assemble them, they can be made in multiples for a group or be dressed more elaborately for someone special.

So enjoy & we’d love to see what you’ve created!

Quick & Easy Holiday Arrangement

Pods on Acantha Leaf

Holiday Arrangement

Now that the Holidays are here, instead of taking over a week to decorate just the tree alone, I have come up with simple solutions that still please my artistic eye.  Decorating can be quick and easy at Holiday time.

I am crazy about the PODS.  They are so intriguing, unusual and I think of them as jewels that I can paint, gild, glitter, though they are beautiful left just as they are.  You’ve seen the look we did with our “Nuts, Pods and Cones” where we’ve painted only one kind of shape gold or silver and then piled the mix in a basket or bowl.

For this arrangement, I dry brushed the large “Flame Pods” with some gold paint just hitting the high spots, bringing out the ridges & shape of these fabulous pods. I arranged them on an Acantha leaf. These are REAL leaves that has been “gilded” but don’t fret if you have a little breakage on the edges or there’s a slight tear. It makes them more natural to have those “imperfections”.  They are real and large!  For contrast in shape, I added a few “Crusted Apple Pods”, “Mahogany Pods”, several “Giraffe Balls.”   The focal point is the amazing “Lotus Pod.”   Using my own decorating tip, I couldn’t help but add some gold twigs. Candles always add a festive touch especially in these dark days. So, I added a votive candle but you could make a lovely vignette with an arrangement of pillar candles behind and/or flanking it.  Yes, you could add all kinds of things, this might be only a beginning for you.  For me it had to be quick and easy & beautiful.

I did a simple a  thing with the pods that weren’t used on the leaf.  That’s why I like the large glass container idea.  You could use a large glass tray, bowl or apothecary jar.  The great thing is it’s mobile!  I can move it from the kitchen bar area where all the hors d’ouveres are spread out and then another night I can put it in the center of the table and surround it with votives/tea lights.

It is a NO FAIL quickie.  Layer some smaller pods like “Lichee” or “Crusted Apple” in groups of 5.  Then add some larger ones like the “Lotus Pod”,  try 1 or 3 then add some Spun Metal (I mixed bronze and gold- but remember a very little goes a longway.)  I didn’t want the vase to be packed so I added some gold-sprayed Nandina stems for lightweight volume.

Easy, quick and fun to do AND all you have to do to make it Christmas is add some evergreen sprays, small glass  ornaments,  a shiny ribbon, maybe some scented oil …TA-DAAA  Happy Holidays!

Preserving summer

by Andrea August 23, 2010

Once again, I am outside wandering around,  just looking at things.    I do love gardening,  but I only grow flowers..too many opossums, raccoons, squirrels and birds for food crops (except the gigantic cherry tree).   The jays do steal the coco & moss linings of the hanging baskets for nest building.  There’s plenty to share and I don’t mind [...]

The Conga Line of Cats

by Andrea July 23, 2010

We’ve heard lots about darling Thistle but,  it’s time that felines were added as one of our other loves.  Do you have a mark on your door that signals to all cats “FOOD,  SHELTER & TRAINABLE STAFF”  Most cat owners that have more than one,  seem to have mostly ‘strays.’  You will hear many stories [...]

Sandpainting “Teaser”

by Sandi Reinke June 27, 2010

I thought I would do a quick “teaser” about the upcoming workshop that Art and I (& Thistle) will again be taking in August on “sandpainting”. I know that a number of you have written to us asking for more info on it, and I discovered that I had actually written a short report [...]

Thistle Comes to Oregon (part 3)

by Sandi Reinke May 22, 2010

Bruce and Susie still had a couple more weeks before closing up their house in Baja and heading back to LA.  Thistle was adjusting well, and was still spending her nights in the side yard, with the cage open so that she could come as go as she pleased. The side yard had windows that [...]

Here’s one of my favorite things to use that doesn’t cost anything –except spray paint which you probably already have. Do you have any Nandina plants, commonly called Heavenly Bamboo? Share and Enjoy:

Artist’s Book- Spring Peony

by Andrea February 17, 2010

We’ve been blessed with a mild winter so far….hyacinth bulbs are are up 5″,  hellebores have flowers and lots of things are budding out.   The peonies have red beaks bursting from the blank brown earth.   It’s so hard to believe what a show they’ll be in May/June.  I can hardly wait for their scent and exuberance and I [...]

Rescuing Thistle – The Plan (part 2)

by Sandi Reinke February 4, 2010

The drive back to my sister’s house is about 15 minutes, and as reality set in we filled the time with various scenarios about how we should let the guys know that we had the dog, (we were gone long enough that we were guessing that dark suspicions had already taken root)  and then, more [...]
